FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Let’s begin with the most important question: What makes Profiles & Light different?
Unlike many “just-starting-out” family photographers, I bring a consistent, professional process — from inquiry to delivery. Clients know exactly what to expect, when they’ll receive their gallery, and how their session will unfold. No guesswork, no ghosting, no over-editing. My goal is for you to look back and feel the day — the laughter, connection, tenderness, and even the chaos — not just see what it looked like because those things are what turns a pretty picture into a meaningful photograph.
We believe in the kind of light that warms your skin, softens edges, and makes everything feel a little more real. Most of my sessions are outdoors, in the soft glow of evening when the light tells the story as much as the people do.
Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about booking, sessions, delivery and payments and what to expect when we work together.
Booking & Scheduling
-
How do I book a session?
Complete this form with your personal info, session info and any other important details.
Once we chat and confirm your needs, deliverables, and timeline, I’ll send an invoice. Your session is officially reserved once payment is received. -
How far in advance should I book?
Most people book at least two weeks out, but fall and holiday sessions tend to fill quickly, so booking 4–6 weeks ahead is best.
-
What happens after I submit the form?
You’ll get an automatic email confirming I received your inquiry.
From there, I’ll follow up within 24–48 hours to talk about your goals, location ideas, and timing. Once everything’s confirmed, I’ll send your invoice. -
Do you require a deposit?
I don’t require a deposit, but full payment is due before your session date.
Once we confirm your date, I’ll send an invoice for the full session fee. Payment secures your spot on the calendar and makes everything official. -
Am I obligated to commit if I fill out the form?
Of course not!
Filling out the form just starts the conversation — it helps me learn what you’re looking for and see if we’re a good fit. There’s no obligation to book until you’re ready to move forward and secure your date. -
I'm not quite ready to book yet...
No worries at all! Something clearly caught your eye, so let’s talk about what you’re looking for and how I can help. Whether you’re ready to book or just exploring options, we’ll figure out what fits best — no pressure, no commitment. Fill out the Contact form and let’s have a conversation.
Session Details
-
Where do sessions take place?
Nearly all sessions, except for newborns, are outdoors. I’m happy to suggest spots that match your style or meet somewhere that’s meaningful to you.
-
Do you utilize a studio?
No, I prefer shooting outdoors — on a favorite trail or by a lake. Natural settings help people relax and be themselves. The soft evening light adds warmth and balance to every image.
-
Do you travel for sessions?
Yes — I’m based in Northern Virginia and typically service Loudoun and Fairfax counties, but I am happy to travel within surrounding areas. A small travel fee may apply for longer distances.
-
How long does a session last?
Sessions are based on capturing what we need, not the clock.
Half sessions usually run about 30 minutes, and full sessions are closer to an hour. That gives us plenty of time for natural, candid moments and a few classic shots without feeling rushed. If the light is perfect, we might linger a little longer — I’m never one to cut a great moment short. -
What should we wear?
The best outfits are the ones that make you feel comfortable and like yourself.
Neutrals, earth tones, and soft textures photograph beautifully in soft evening light. Choose pieces that move naturally, feel good, and reflect who you are — that comfort always shows in the photos. -
Do you photograph pets or extended families?
Absolutely — as long as we plan ahead a bit for group size and attention spans. Pets are part of the family, too!
-
Can I bring ideas or inspiration?
Definitely!
I love when clients share their vision, color palette, or favorite poses — it helps me capture what feels most like you. I even bring a Bluetooth speaker so we can play your favorite tracks and keep the vibe relaxed and fun.
-
Do you offer posed newborn sessions?
No, I don’t do posed newborn sessions or use props. Instead, my focus is on capturing the beautiful moments that naturally unfold in front of me.
Editing & Delivery
-
What is your editing style?
I provide gentle, natural edits with warm tones and true-to-life color. My goal is to make your photos feel like real moments — just a little more polished. Retouching (like reshaping or removing people or objects) isn’t included. See my Recent Work for current examples.
-
When should I receive my photos?
Our policy states delivery within two weeks, but turnaround is typically much shorter.
Sneak peeks may be shared on Instagram (@profilesandlight) before your full gallery is ready. You’re always welcome to tag yourself or share those moments.
-
How do I get my photos?
You’ll receive an email with a password-protected gallery where you can view, download, and share your images. You can also order professional-quality prints, gifts, and albums right from the gallery.
-
Can I order prints or albums?
Absolutely!
Your gallery includes easy options for high-quality prints, wall art, albums, and keepsakes — all through a professional photo lab and shipped straight to you!
Payments & Policies
-
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards, ApplePay, Venmo and bank transfers. Payment processing is administered securely through QuickBooks.
-
What if I need to reschedule or cancel?
Life happens, and we understand that plans sometimes change.
If a reschedule is needed due to illness, weather, or something unexpected, we’ll simply find a new date or issue a full refund. If you’d like a full reshoot for any other reason, a new session fee will apply. Complete explanations of the Reschedule, Reshoot and Refund policies are in the Terms and Conditions at the bottom of every page. -
What if the weather isn't cooperating?
I’ll keep an eye on the forecast and reach out the day before your session to make a plan if weather looks unfavorable.
Reschedules due to weather are never ideal, but they’re always at no extra cost — we’ll find a new date that keeps your photos (and your mood) bright.
